La Solitaire du Figaro Plymouth 2014
This was on the one hand very rewarding, helping Plymouth recapture its offshore nautical history yet on the other hand extremely frustrating.
Following the event, the French organisers rated Plymouth as the best overseas stopover in the history of the event. If that was our only objective, I would feel hugely proud to have been part of it. My attempt to secure regional, national and international synergy and cooperation with all partners was ambitious and alas sadly unrealistic.
The lesson that I take with me is that this is not an arena to mix passion with sound business sense and strategy. Plymouth has to believe in its heritage and develop a strategy that has commitment and integrity to its cause. The idea had much merit but the needs of many were too disparate and insincere to follow through for the lasting effect that Plymouth's Soul so desperately needs to recapture.
