Devises to Westminster Kayak Race

The Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Marathon (DW) is one of the most demanding open-to-all endurance events on the planet. 125 miles by kayak or canoe from Devizes along the Kennet & Avon Canal to the River Thames and down to Westminster in the heart of London.

I was inspired by colleagues and the tradition of the DW to have a go. I had already run the furthest you could run in an event in the UK (Dartmoor 100). Cycled the furthest from John O’Groats to Lands’ End and the DW offered the furthest you could kayak in an event in the UK.

This challenge was not about racing or coming first but engaging in a journey with a friend (Mike Hallam) to discover the magic of a world renowned event coveted by others. It allowed me to add to my portfolio of experience in understanding the mind management needed by an endurance athlete to finish this type of endurance event. This again would redefine my opinion of how to advance safety and athlete responsibility, without diluting the character and achievement of such events.
